June 14, 1944
Dear Diary,
This may be the last entry for me in a while, if I am still alive, I will be writing more. Tomorrow is the day to fight and win. Right now, I am placed in the Gilbert Islands. I have joined up with the army with the goal of surviving until the end of war, but every day I have to expect that I will die and that all the dreams I had hoped for my siblings would be destroyed. I wasn't able to contact them for almost two years now. With all the movements from California all the way to the Pacific Islands, I was always busy and not able to send anything to my family. I just wonder what they've been up to, and how they're living their lives.
From the last diary entry, there has been many chances, such as the battles in the Pacific Ocean against the forces of Japan. From the beginning of my conscription into the military, I had no passion to kill, but one person had changed all of that. A military pilot with the name Paul Tibbets told me and my group around the beginning of this year what it means to be a soldier of the army. By giving us insights into what patriotism and nationalism really means, I began to have the surge of power to fight my best against the people who instigated the battle for us, the Japanese. I have decided that I will try and fight till the end and notice the honor and the country that I am serving in the military.

My captain, or Lieutenant General Holland Smith has told us that this may be one of the most important battles for our nation against our enemy. If we win, then he stated that the United States of America would finally get close enough for more severe military action. I don't know if this was a good plan for me, but I know that I will be serving my country. I don't know what the outcome will be or if I will die in battle, but I know that I will fight till the end. I will try hard and make sure this, won't be the end of Jonathan Marks, and his journey to success.
